There are motels in Shaver Lake, but I'm thinking about camping nearer to the start of the trail at Courtwright Res. There is a campground by Voyager Rock (aka Chicken Rock). I can't stay in a motel because of my dog Rubi.
Plan is to hit the trail at 0900 on Friday morning starting a Voyager Rock Camp Ground on the North East Side of Courtwright Res. this is an easy 2 mile trip across the dam and up the right side of the lake. It is probably at least an hour from Shaver Lake to Courtwright Res so if you stay in Shaver Lake be on the road by 0700.
Trail starts at Voyager Rock (aka Chicken Rock) and heads up to Thompson Lake the toughest part of the trail is Thompson Hill as you can see from the elevation profile this is one mother of a hill. it goes on for 2 miles and keeps getting tougher as you climb. Plan is to make it to Thomson Lake on Day 1.
On Day 2 - Saturday - we should make it to Ershim Lake, and on Day 3 there is a tough section while getting up to Kaiser Pass to get back to pavement.
